I Love This Alot

That’s not a typo. Have you ever read the blog Hyperbole and a Half? If you haven’t, I now know what you’ll be spending the rest of your week doing. It is one of the funniest things you will ever read. Allow me to suggest you start here, or here, or no, definitely here.

Out of that last link there, this magical creature was born. I seriously, since first reading that post 3 and a half years ago now, think of the Alot every single time I see someone someone misspell “a lot,” which given that I spend several hours a day on the internet, is pretty often.

A couple of months ago, a friend of mine told me she planned to be the blog’s author, Allie Brosh, for Halloween, and asked if I could make her a stuffed Alot. I’d never made a stuffed animal before, but always up for a challenge, I said yes. She sent me a picture of a fairly simple one she’d seen online, and I figured I’d just have to cut two vaguely-alot-shaped pieces of fleece, sew around the edges, and stuff.

Well, it was a little more complicated than that. Fleece is not the easiest material to feed through a sewing machine, so I used lots of tear-away interfacing. After cutting the pieces, I appliquéd the tooth, used a tight zigzag stitch to for the mouth, and added plastic teddy bear eyes. Next I sewed and stuffed the horns, cut the claws, and basted them all to the right side of the Alot’s front panel. Then, I pinned down the back panel, right sides together, and sewed around everything except about a 3 inch space on his back (for stuffing). Finally, I turned him right-side-out, stuffed him, and hand-sewed his back up.

I was pretty happy with the results, as was my friend. And my toddler. Here we are at the post office getting ready to send him off. Allie was not thrilled when she had to give him up. I’ll have to make her her own…eventually.
