Sewing Machine Pin Cushion

This is one of those projects that I did on a complete whim, and now I don’t even know how I lived without it.

So simple, but so, so genius in its functionality. I think I pinned something similar ages ago (hey look at that, I did), and had the idea in the back of my head for awhile, but I didn’t actually use a tutorial for this.

I spent almost a full Sunday sewing a few weeks ago. It was glorious. I had just finished one of my Stash n Dash bags, and was about to move on to my placemats, when I got irrationally annoyed over the fact that I don’t have a pin cushion. I kept dropping pins on the floor, which is bad news when you have a newly mobile baby. So after about the 12th time I found myself down on my hands and knees picking up a lost pin, I had had it.

I grabbed a scrap piece of fabric and a little bit of elastic and just started sewing.

I’m not joking, this thing has kindof changed my life (okay, it’s at least changed my sewing habits). It’s such an easy motion to remove a pin and stick it in the cushion as I sew. No more piles of pins underneath my machine, and no more dropping!

Note: My cushion differs slightly from the tutorial I linked above. Most significantly, I used elastic rather than ribbon. It ensures a nice snug fit and I don’t have to worry about it coming loose or falling off. I just quickly removed the needle and presser foot from my machine to put it on. I also angled the sides toward the elastic, just for fun. Everything else is basically the same from what I can tell.
