Craft Hoarders

I have an idea for a reality show. TLC, call me.

I’m on phase–I don’t know–a billion of cleaning out and organizing my craft room. I have a ton of stuff that I use regularly. But I also have a ton of stuff that hasn’t been touched in ages. I thought I’d taken care of most of it when we moved, but I thought wrong. So now I’m going through my craft room like a tornado and trying to get rid of stuff.

Then I come across things like this.

I swear I’ve had this thing for longer than I can remember. I (or maybe it was my sister, who knows) got it for Christmas when I was a child. Like, probably 9 or 10. Definitely not older than 13. It’s still not finished.

For years it sat in a drawer in my night stand. Then I moved out of my parents’ house, and it moved with me. Then it came to California. I finally, once and for all set it in the trash pile yesterday. Then I plucked it out again today and decided I would finish it. This has probably happened no less than 500 times in the past 20 years.

I have no idea why I do this. It’s not like it has any sentimental value. I don’t even remember who gave it to me. Or if it even was given to me. I have a vague memory that maybe it was given to my sister, and I just claimed it after 10 years or so. I have not once, in 20 years thought “Oh! What I really need here is a cross stitched picture of a Christmasy rocking horse. I have just the thing!” (And I hope I never do.) Yet here we are.

Anyway, I’m going to finish it. I am. And then I’ll put it in a box with the Winnie the Pooh cross-stitch that I did finish 7 years ago, and for the next 20 years I’ll come across them every few months or so and wonder why I’m keeping them.

What crazy unfinished projects have you been holding onto for years? I know I can’t be the only one.
