Monkey Matchbox

Christy Copics, Ink & Paper, Tutorials 69 Comments

I got a little adventurous with this week’s make and take. I usually avoid Copics in make-and-takes because it’s a lot to teach to a large group in a short amount of time. But this little image from Dandelion Designs is only about an inch square, and only took 4 markers to color, so we risked it. Isn’t he cute.

The box was a bit of an adventure as well. But once I got the dimensions figured out, it really couldn’t be any easier to make.

In fact, the tutorial is very short, and requires almost no pictures.

All you need is 2 pieces of double-sided cardstock (mine are from the Boys Only line by Doodlebug) cut to 2.5 inches by 4.5 inches.

To make the inner box, score 1/2 inch in from each long side, and 1/2 inch and 1 inch in from each short side of the cardstock. The result will look like this:

Once all your score lines are in place, you’ll see that they create two boxes at each corner. You want to snip the corner-most boxes away, and then snip the side of inner box parallel to the long side. The red lines in the diagram below represent the cut lines.

Your unassembled box will look like the piece on the right:

To assemble the box, fold in along all the score lines. The ends of the box will wrap around the tabs extending from the sides of the box. Use a little adhesive on the ends to keep everything in place.

To make the outer sleeve, score 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch in from each short side of the cardstock. The result will look like the piece on the left above. Here are the dimensions:

Fold on the score lines, and adhere the ends together. It’s a good idea to fold the sleeve around the box before you glue it together, that way you can be sure it will fit. A glue stick works great for this because you can reposition it slightly until it dries.

The end result is this cute little matchbox, 1.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches long, and half an inch deep. Perfect for little trinkets. Or matches.

The monkey is stamped on Neenah cardstock, cut to 1 1/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches, so it fits perfectly on top.
