Hats Off

I spent most of my weekend mopey and sad over the death of a friend. Of course, if that friend had seen the way I was behaving, she would not have been happy. Hers was a life to be celebrated.

At some point in my funk I reached for my crochet hook. It’s been awhile since I’ve crocheted, as my needlecraft time has been monopolized by the stockings I’m knitting. But crocheting is so much more comforting than knitting. I didn’t want to think about switching colors mid-row, or counting stitches. I didn’t want to think. So I grabbed a happy purple yarn and made this.

How can you not smile when you look at that? It’s a silly way to honor a friend, I know. But I like to think she’d see it and laugh, then roll her eyes and pat me on the head.

Hold the people you love a little bit closer today, and if you have a moment, send up a little prayer for heaven’s newest angel.
